Literary Response

These are a few reasons I think, Percy Jackson from “The Lightning Thief” and Melody Brooks from “Out of my Mind” are similar. To start with, they both have some disabilities, like Melody can not do things on her own, and Percy has A.D.H.D. which makes him restless and not able to focus, and dyslexia which makes it hard for him to read correctly. They were like a baby bird about to fly. ” I can’t walk. I can’t talk. I can’t feed myself or take myself to the bathroom.” ” Diagnosed with dyslexia. Probably A.D.H.D., too.” With this in mind, they also both have some hidden talents know one knew, like how Percy can control water and is very talented in sword fighting. Also how Melody is super smart, and has photographic memory. “I stepped into the creek, instantly I felt better. I could feel the cuts on my chest closing up.” “I suppose it’s a good thing to be unable to forget anything.” It’s like they could anything and everything. Melody and Percy are, not to mention, smarter than people think. “The only person who got every single correct is Melody Brooks.” “That’s because your mind is hardwired for Ancient Greek. As for attention problems, that’s because you see too much Percy, not too little. Your senses are better than a regular mortal’s.” They are baby tigers learning how to hunt for the first time.
Nevertheless, these were a few things I thought were similar between, Percy Jackson from “The Lightning Thief” and Melody Brooks from “Out of my Mind.”

What I Think About Sharon Draper’s Writing

These are a few things I like Sharon Draper’s book, “Out of my Mind.”
Sharon Draper is descriptive about most of the characters we have read in the book. Like,
“If Maria is our hugger then Gloria is our rocker.” Also ” Willy loves baseball.” ” Freddy, who’s almost twelve is the oldest in our group.”She also has descriptive language that creates imagery. Like ” I slide out of my wheelchair like wet spaghetti.” Or ‘it was white and soft and just the right size for chubby baby fingers to pick up.” “I couldn’t roll over, so it was just an irritated me, the shag rug, and the smell of spilled sour soy milk in my face until I got rescued.” She also puts the story in first person so we experience what she does. ” I remember stupid stuff, like the feel of a lump of oatmeal stuck on the roof of my mouth, or the taste of toothpaste not rinsed of my teeth. ” I love the smell of my mother’s hair after she washes it.”
Those were a few things I like about Sharon Draper’s book ” Out of my Mind.”
